- The World of Subtitles

Already 10 years ago, the rbb Innovations team began to research and enhance subtitles. The project DTV4All focussed on the graphic presentation of subtitles on TV.

The follow-up project HBB-NEXT developed the technology enabling viewers with smart TVs to adapt the position, font size and design of subtitles according to their particular preference for broadcast TV. This accessibility feature is now available on the national TV channel 'Das Erste' and in all ARD regional broadcasters' HbbTV launcher bar.

The next logical step was to ensure subtitles, professionally created for TV broadcasts were available for on-demand content. In the HBB4ALL project, and in cooperation with ARD.de/ SWR, we introduced subtitles to the HbbTV on-demand video library.

ImAc - 360° Video Accessibility

Our experience with media accessibility helps us ensure new services are accessible for all viewers. As the amount of immersive 360° video and VR content steadily increase, so does the variety of devices upon which to consume it. In the ImAc project we found solutions to enhance accessibility of such immersive media content. Thus, users were of particular relevance to this project, and were deeply involved in providing feedback and requirements.
