Wie jeder Dirigent damals, war auch Bernstein kein "ausgebildeter" Dirigent. Sondern gelernter Komponist (und Pianist), der anschließend eine kleine Zusatzausbildung gemacht hatte. Ähnlich waren alle Dirigenten von einst Seiteneinsteiger.

Geboren als Sohn ukrainischer Juden, hieß er eigentlich Louis. Als er 1958 erster US-amerikanischer Chef des New York Philharmonic wurde, lag ein Zickzack aus verschiedensten Erfolgen längst hinter ihm.
